Egg cuts

Back to Index of Topical cuts

A facetted gem the size of a hen's egg is often used in fiction as a description of a gemstone of imense value.
Hence many have tried cutting egg shaped gemstones. Both round and facetted style.

The Smithsonian in Washington DC has a 7478 carat big quartz egg with 240 facets on display.
But many have cut smaller eggs with great results

Here is a small collection of some of these cuts. Some are online available, others must be bought or lend.

Cut By Date Remarks
In the following, the pictures are screen dumps from either GemCad or GemCutStudio showing the outline of the design.
Designs with a Dvue number is available from facetdiagrams.org as long as they are open.

On Facetdiagrams.org there are several designs listed with an egg shaped girdle outline. But they still have the traditional pointed pavillon and crown with table - or checkered. I don't count them in this overview.
